Truck roll cost

Every call starts with the truck leaving the shop. Add up what the vehicle costs per mile and what the drive time costs in labor to see your cost per truck roll and the lowest trip or diagnostic fee that covers it.

Pay plus burden per hour. The tech pay and efficiency calculator can work this out.

Time to find the problem before the customer approves a repair.

Average completed calls per tech per day.

How we calculate it

  1. Vehicle cost per mile = (fuel + insurance + payment + maintenance) ÷ miles per year
  2. Vehicle cost per call = vehicle cost per mile × miles per call
  3. Drive labor per call = tech loaded hourly cost × drive minutes ÷ 60
  4. Cost per truck roll = vehicle cost per call + drive labor per call
  5. Break-even trip charge = cost per truck roll
  6. Break-even diagnostic fee = cost per truck roll + tech loaded hourly cost × diagnose minutes ÷ 60
  7. Truck roll cost per day = cost per truck roll × calls per day

This is a break-even floor, not a price: it leaves out office overhead, dispatch, tools and profit. Use it to check that your trip or diagnostic fee isn’t losing money before the repair starts.
